It's no secret that Chinese cars are increasingly appearing in dealerships in Russia and neighboring countries. Modern design, good, sometimes even abundant functionality of security and comfort systems, also an attractive price. It is the cost that most often attracts buyers who want to change from domestic or supported vehicles to something new and modern.

According to various reliable data, a new Wey brand, a premium division of Great Wall, which has already won the hearts of motorists with its massive SUVs, is entering the Russian market. One of the first models of the Wey company, which can already be found on the streets of Russia, is considered the VV5, aka W02. Often, Chinese crossovers are only front-wheel drive, here an exception has turned out. The top version of the Wey VV5 received a four-wheel drive, with automatic control.

For the first time, the new Wey VV5 crossover was presented in 2017, almost immediately the new product appeared on sale, in the territory of the Middle Kingdom. Now, two years later, the manufacturer announced the supply of cars to Russia and neighboring countries. Externally, the novelty received a stylish design, modern features and an ideal proportion of the ratio of body and wheel sizes (which was usually considered a sore for Chinese cars).

The cabin also has a modern design closely intertwined with new technologies, a large multimedia display, a digital dashboard and, of course, a spacious interior. Nevertheless, there are also disadvantages, the engineers offered the buyer only one turbocharged gasoline engine and one robotic transmission. The drive of the Wey VV5 crossover, as already mentioned, can be front or full, depending on the configuration. Let's take a closer look at the new product, characteristics and equipment.

Exterior Wey VV5

Usually, the appearance of Chinese cars is not particularly surprising, it can be nondescript or concocted from existing models. As for the new Wey brand, it rather follows the 50/50 principle. The idea is taken from existing models, but the final result has been refined and improved. The second crossover in the brand's lineup received a formidable look, with a special character that is often not found in Chinese cars.

The front of the new Wey VV5 is distinguished by an open center grille with an emblem in the center. It is complemented by a more massive lower additional grille. The grille inserts are different, the upper grill has a diamond-shaped mesh insert, but the lower one has got rectangular notches. The shape of the bumper played an equally important role in the design of the front end. The designers extended the side part forward, in comparison with the central part. Here, vertical LED fog lights and small aerodynamic holes are added to the side.

The most formidable role in the design of the crossover was played by optics. Starting with the basic configuration Wey VV5, the optics are LED, with pronounced square lenses, along the contour of which LED running lights are built. This combination looks especially stylish in the dark, the optics resembles a dragon's eye, and the black background gives additional features.

The final point in the design of the front end of the Wey VV5 was put by the hood. As conceived by the designers, it lies on top of the front optics, but end-to-end with the side fenders. To somehow highlight the hood, a strict line has been added around the perimeter, as if dividing the hood into upper and lower parts. As for the windshield, there are no features here, except for the tilt back, which is non-standard for many modern crossovers, but more typical for sedans and sports cars.

If the front of the Wey VV5 Chinese crossover seemed perfect, then on the side, as for me, there are pros and cons. As already mentioned, a huge plus is the ratio of the proportion of the body and the size of the wheels. The very design of the novelty seems to be more sporty than suitable for off-road driving. A wavy line extends from the front fender to the hind feet, with another stamped line along the bottom of the doors.

On the downside, I would like to note the location of the door handles. On the front door, the handles are tailored to suit the average driver and passenger. The rear door handles were lifted up almost as much as possible, which immediately pulled a lot of inconveniences. I agree that they are on the same wavy line, but from the side it does not look the best way. This decision is more likely due to the size of the glass and the designers' attempt to make a smooth, descending back of the roof.

It is quite unusual that for this Chinese car they used a minimum of chrome-plated parts, replacing them with plastic elements painted to match the body color or even painted in gloss black. They have not deviated from the present in terms of side mirrors. In the new Wey VV5, they are positioned on the door panel, although it would be nice to make a classic by placing them in the corner of the front windows. According to the manufacturer, starting from the basic configuration, the side mirrors will be equipped with heating, electric drive and automatic folding.

As for the body color of the Wey VV5, it all depends on the country of delivery. For the Celestial Empire, they produce bright options, for Russia, they suggested classic shades. The most common are:

  • black;
  • Red;
  • blue;
  • silver;
  • White;
  • Brown.

The main for the Chinese crossover Wey VV5 were 18 ″ alloy wheels, with 235/60 tires as standard. The mid-range trims got 19 ″ wheels with 235/55 tires, and the top versions got 20 ″ alloy wheels (245/45 tires). It would seem that the wheel arches are large, but no, they are rather close to the tires, although the designers have played with this problem. By enlarging the rims, they proportionally reduced the size of the tires.

Most of all, the new Wey VV5 will surprise at the rear. The massive and austere appearance does not at all betray the Chinese origin. The trunk lid has received a slight slope, reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne. The very top is decorated with a sports spoiler with an additional stop repeater and a small rear window wiper. The hind feet were traditionally placed partly on the body, partly on the trunk lid.

To emphasize the design, the feet were connected with a chrome line and the brand lettering. The rear bumper also played a role in the design of the Wey VV5. Vertical LED fog lights were placed on the side of the bumper, and the central part was allocated for a huge diffuser. There is also a stop follower, although it is not clear why it is, as well as two real nozzles of the exhaust system, and not a dummy, as is often the case today.

The last detail to be considered in the design of the Wey VV5 is of course the roof. It all depends on the configuration. The basic versions received a solid roof, advanced configurations have a large panoramic sunroof, but the top version of the panorama with a sliding front part. Starting from the base, roof rails are installed, as well as a small antenna in the form of a shark fin.

Overall, the new Chinese crossover Wey VV5 leaves a pleasant impression, especially the exterior design. The manufacturer tried his best to modify it to European standards, thereby moving away from the style of the Middle Kingdom.

The interior of the new Wey VV5

Having dealt with the exterior of the Wey VV5, consider the new crossover inside. The Chinese is Chinese, and the buyer has something to surprise. The front panel can be said to be poor in functionality, but on the other hand, many details were transferred to the display of a 9 ″ multimedia system as standard. The basis for multimedia was the proprietary Baidu CarLife platform, although Apple CarPlay is also available in parallel.

On board the crossover there is also a Wi-Fi access point, 4G LTE mobile communications, wireless charging and other modern goodies. Immediately under the display there are three round air ducts, and a couple of air ducts on the sides of the dashboard. From the decorative elements, you can note the horizontal step with a glossy finish and the Start / Stop button for the engine. In fact, that's all in the center of the console.

The central tunnel Wey VV5 turned out to be much more functional. At the very beginning there is a climate control panel, several buttons for security and comfort systems, as well as controls for heating and airflow of the seats. The transmission lever is the same for all configurations, so many other buttons have been placed around, including an electromechanical handbrake, a suspension control washer, and security systems. With the additions, we can note a small recess for wireless charging, a USB port and a 12V outlet, a pair of cup holders closer to the armrest and, of course, the armrest itself.

Now about the Wey VV5 salon, its designers have completely reworked, removing all the flaws and touches of Chinese cars. The first row received massive lateral support, high backrests and adjustable high headrests. From the functionality, it is possible to note the electric adjustment drive, the driver's seat memory, heating and air cooling. For an additional fee, they offer to install a massage function.

The second row of seats does not stand out in particular. The folding ratio is standard 60/40, and there is enough space for full-build passengers. If necessary, the second row seats can be pushed back and the backrest tilted. As for the upholstery of the interior, then all configurations, except for the base one, will receive a leather interior. In the base, the salon is sheathed with high-quality fabric. If you want more, then for an additional fee, they offer to sheathe the interior with Nappa leather, with inserts of different materials.

Regarding the colors of the Wey VV5 interior, you should not expect a lot of choice:

  • black;
  • beige;
  • Brown;
  • burgundy.

Considering that they offer an optional cladding option, respectively, there is an option for choosing a color. Finally, it is worth considering the driver's seat of the Wey VV5 crossover. As with the upholstery, there is plenty to choose from. The basic version will surprise you with a large analog device and a color display of the on-board computer. As an option or for a separate surcharge, the dashboard can be fully digital, based on a 12.3 ″ color display.

The steering wheel of the Wey VV5 is also prettier. Functional buttons are installed as standard, they can be adjusted in height and depth. High quality leather is used for the upholstery, and to add a touch of design, the lower part of the steering wheel has been flattened and sheathed with perforated leather. This solution is beautiful and comfortable for the hands. Well, we can say that the interior of the Wey VV5 crossover can really surprise, since the material is of high quality, the assembly is also at a height, in the same way as the functionality.

Specifications Wey VV5 2017-2019

Unlike the exterior and interior of the crossover, the specs of the new Wey VV5 are meager. In fact, the buyer is only offered a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Under the hood, one turbocharged gasoline engine and a robotic transmission are paired.

The availability of all-wheel drive for a Chinese car is already considered a progress. In addition, despite the turbocharged unit, the fuel consumption is not so great. Of course, the minus is that there is no choice in terms of units and only one engine is available.

Regarding the suspension of the Wey VV5, this is the usual classic version. MacPherson struts are installed in front, double wishbone independent suspension in the back. The braking system is of the same good quality, ventilated disc brakes are installed both front and rear, while the handbrake in all trim levels is electromechanical.

The wheels of the Wey VV5 crossover play a role in the design. The basic equipment received 18 ″ alloy wheels with 235/60 tires. Other configurations have got 19 ″ (235/55) or 20 ″ (245/45) discs. The spare wheel is, of course, incomplete, in the form of a stowaway, since there is practically no free space for a full-size wheel.

Safety and comfort Wey VV5 2017-2019

Following the comfortable interior, the Wey VV5 engineers did a good job on the safety and comfort systems. The crossover list includes:

  • front airbags;
  • side airbags (front and rear);
  • mount ISOFIX;
  • children's lock;
  • air conditioning or climate control;
  • central locking;

  • automatic parallel parking system;
  • light sensor;
  • Wi-Fi access point;
  • mobile connection;
  • voice control;
  • GPS;
  • Bluetooth;
  • USB, AUX, SD card.

As for a Chinese car, we can say that this is a rich functional set. With all that the manufacturer has not yet announced, what will please buyers in Russia and neighboring countries. Obviously, there will be differences in the list of the car if we compare crossovers for the Middle Kingdom and the Russian Federation.

Price and configuration Wey VV5

It is not yet reliably known which configurations of the Wey VV5 will arrive in Russia. Perhaps the same as for the Celestial Empire, and maybe modified versions. It is reliably known that today in China they offer 5 different configurations. The manufacturer named the prices, as well as the main differences.

Well, looking at the Wey VV5 crossover from start to finish, we can say that the designers managed to mix European standards and Chinese production. Both externally and internally, the car received a good design. In terms of technical characteristics, the engine copes well with the tasks set, in addition, there is a four-wheel drive. Of course, the minus is that there is no variety of units, and the transmission is only robotic, although it would be possible to throw a manual transmission.
